Costs for an ExRacer in Rehab/Foster Care
Hay: $5+ per bale of horse quality grass hay. An average adult TB will eat 1/3 to 1/2 a bale per day.
Feed: $15-$20 per 50# bag of average horse feed. An average adult TB will eat 6-8 lbs per day.
Supplements: $25/month will provide a TB with a nutritional fat supplement for weight gain, recovery and parasite control.
Bedding: $15-$30/month will provide adequate bedding for a stall bound horse in rehab.
Farrier: $20 will provide a visit by the farrier for hoof trims. $50 will provide shoes every 6-8 weeks.
Veterinary Care: $40 will provide a visit from the veterinarian. An additional $40 will provide a basic health exam.
Pain Killers: $50 will purchase NSAIDs to relieve pain for horses recovering from surgery or traumatic injury.
Vaccinations: $70 will provide spring and fall vaccinations. Because racehorses generally have many owners and trainers, their basic care is overlooked.
Dental Care: $100 will provide dental care. Because racehorses generally have many owners before they retire, this basic but important care item is often overlooked. Horses will often come to us with sharp points and hooks on their teeth, making chewing food painful.
Joint Injections: $200 will provide intra-articular joint injections for ex-racehorses recovering from joint injuries and suffering from osteoarthritis.
Basic Care & Feeding in a Boarding Stable: $225 - $250 will provide feed, hay, bedding and daily turnout for one horse at a boarding stable for one month.
Professional Training: $250 - $300 will provide 30 days of professional retraining so that an ex-racehorse can learn to become a riding horse and find a home.
