FFI strives to promote animal welfare and education. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses who would otherwise loose their lives. Friends of Ferdinand provides options for an eminent equine welfare need - what to do with the unwanted horse. We direct our resources to the equine population of retiring racehorses.
FFI provides programs for transitioning and rehoming racehorses into riding horses with skills to give them value after the finish line. To achieve this, FFI works with owners and trainers at Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs to identify and obtain thoroughbreds that are nearing the end of their racing careers. We evaluate and retrain them with the goal of finding each horse a new, forever home with devoted, caring owners. Our motto is "Retired from Racing, Not from Life."
As of August 2009, more than 250 horses have been transitioned from the track to new homes.
