Costs for an ex-racehorse in rehab/ foster care |
|
Hay - $4 - $5 a bale of horse
quality grass hay. A average adult thoroughbred
will eat 1/3 to 1/2 a bale of hay a day.
Feed - $11-15 for a 50 pound bag of quality horse feed.
An average adult thoroughbred will eat 6-8 pounds a day.
Supplements - $25 per month will provide a thoroughbred
with nutritional fat supplement for weight gain and
recovery and parasite control.
Bedding - $15 - $30 a month will provide adequate bedding
for a stall bound horse in rehab.
Farrier - $20 will provide a visit by the farrier for
hoof trims. $50.00 will provide shoes every 6-8
weeks.
Veterinarian care - $40 will provide a visit from the
veterinarian. An additional $40 will provide a
basic health exam.
Pain killers - $50 will purchase NSAIDs to relieve pain
for horses recovering from traumatic injuries.
Vaccinations - $70 will provide spring and fall
vaccinations.
Dental care - $100 will provide dental care.
Joint Injections - $200 will provide intra-articular
joint injections for ex-racehorses recovering from joint
injuries and suffering from osteoarthritis.
Basic care and feeding in a boarding stable - $225 -
$250 will
provide feed, hay, bedding and daily turnout for a horse
housed in a boarding stable.
$250-300 will provide 30 days professional retraining so that an
ex-racehorse can learn to become a riding horse and find
a home.
